Trashy Bags Africa
We are Trashy Bags Africa, and we are proud to be a social enterprise making upcycled eco-friendly bags from discarded drinking water sachets that litter the streets of Accra, Ghana’s capital city, in West Africa.
Trashy Bags Africa is leading the way in sustainable development in Africa, having collected and recycled over 30 million plastic sachets since we started in 2007.
Plastic sachets have become a big problem across Africa because of the lack of recycling initiatives and waste management infrastructure.
Each month nearly 200,000 plastic sachets are being collected and brought to Trashy Bags Africa by a network of people who each obtain an income from their efforts. We employ over forty local people to collect, clean and stitch plastic trash into fashionable and useful bags and other products.
Our products include backpacks, shopping bags, gym bags laptop bags, laptop sleeves, messenger bags, tote bags, vanity cases, purses and wallets, all for everyday use. Each item is designed in-house by a member of our fantastic team.
